2016 vs 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE: What's New?
The 2016 GLE went through many updates so if you are looking to save
while still getting incredible quality, this is a viable option. While the 2017
Mercedes-Benz GLE is nearly identical to the previous model year, there are a
few changes that help it stand out. This makes perfect sense since the 2016 GLE
was a heavily updated new model and the first to bear its name. For 2017,
Mercedes-Benz dropped the turbodiesel from the GLE-Class lineup.
Because the 2016 GLE was so heavily updated, you will probably not find anything lacking with the 2017 version of this Mercedes-Benz. The most noticeable change for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE was the addition of the GLE Coupe although compared to the 2015 M-Class that it replaced, the 2016 GLE had a revised front bumper and new wheel designs.
The infotainment screen was enlarged and the steering wheel was updated as well. Mercedes-Benz also swapped out some of the materials for that GLE model year. Under the hood, there were two new powertrains, including the GLE550e plug-in hybrid with a 3-liter V6 engine that works with an electric motor to give you 436 horsepower, and the GLE63 S AMG with 577 horsepower. Additionally, the GLE63 AMG (non-S variant) saw an increase in horsepower for 2016.
Tracing the GLE History Back to the M-Class
As mentioned, the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class has only been around for the 2016 and 2017 model years. Because of this, the only way to get a true feel for its history is to look at the M-Class that it replaced. After all, Mercedes-Benz made a seamless transition from the 2015 M-Class to the 2016 GLE-Class.
The M-Class was first released as a 1998 model year. At first, it was only offered as the ML320, which had a 215-horsepower 3.2-liter V6 powertrain and a 5-speed automatic. By 2000, there were three trims available, including AMG. The 2012 model year featured a complete redesign, including updates to the powertrains that make them more efficient, stronger, and smoother, plus expanded features.
