Announced on Wednesday, Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks will be partnering to install fast electric vehicle chargers at 100 Starbucks cafes on I-5, a west-coast highway that runs from Mexico to Canada. What could this mean for the rest of the nation and this electrifying high-speed charger investment?

Investing in America’s EV Charging Infrastructure

Mercedes Benz High-Power Charging debuted its first North American charging site at its Sandy Springs, Georgia headquarters last year. Since then, dozens of locations featuring the 500 kW EV chargers have popped up in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Together with Starbucks’s sheer number of shops, they plan to spearhead the expansion of their DC fast charging network in the next 12 to 18 months.

Each location is said to offer four to ten EV fast chargers fitted with NACS nozzles for across-brand usage. While Tesla had been the original company to use NACS nozzles, they are quickly becoming the industry standard. The chargers will also be fitted with CCS nozzles for other vehicles and will accommodate 800-volt battery structures that continue to grow in popularity. Starbucks first planned to incorporate charging back in 2022, with other convenience stops and travel stops pushing for the same. This partnership makes a lot of sense when one considers that electric vehicles on the market still take longer to charge than gas cars take to fuel, making it the perfect opportunity for drivers and passengers time to step inside a shop for refreshments, snacks, or other needed supplies while on the road.
