The next stage of Mercedes-Benz’s electrification strategy is coming into focus. Enter the eSprinter, Mercedes-Benz’s first ever fully electric van.
While Mercedes-Benz has been selling electric vans in the European market for some time, the eSprinter’s arrival in 2024 will mark the U.S. market’s first dalliance with this eco-friendly cargo hauler. Maximizing its versatility with a three-module layout, Mercedes-Benz loaded the eSprinter with a multitude of technical innovations, including the latest in intelligent safety and assistance systems.
Let’s preview what we can expect from the eSprinter and how it deviates from its gas-powered cousin, the Sprinter.
The New Van-Guard
Finally, the large van segment has an electrified vehicle worthy of the Mercedes-Benz star.
The eSprinter offers 488 cubic feet of cargo space, with a maximum payload capacity of 2,624 pounds. Both its payload and towing (4,200 pounds) capacities are slightly lower than the gas-powered Sprinter – but for an electric vehicle, the eSprinter more than carries its own weight.
The base eSprinter is equipped with a rear-wheel drive electric powertrain capable of 134 horsepower (a more powerful 201-hp version is also available). Its EPA range estimate is expected to land at around 230 miles. With a DC fast charger, the battery charge can climb from 10% to 80% in just over 40 minutes.
Leading the Charge in Innovation
This year, Mercedes-Benz invites you to take your preconceived notions of what the inside of a van should look like and throw them out the window.
The eSprinter’s interior is draped in the level of luxury you’ve come to expect from a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Strap in and enjoy heated and pivoting front seats, electric folding exterior mirrors, an electric sliding door and step, and a digital rearview mirror.
The eSprinter comes equipped with the latest version of Mercedes-Benz’s infotainment software, complete with a voice-controlled assistant. The system can also be navigated via touchscreen or touchpad.
In addition, the electric van comes standard with the latest in driver-assistance technology, including:
- Automated emergency braking.
- Blind-spot monitoring.
- Crosswind assist.
- Driver-attention monitoring.
Power to the People
Now available for order at U.S. dealerships, the eSprinter arrives with an MSRP of $71,866.
